Cédrière Del-Fino - Call for solutions

One of the oldest and most important cedar plantation in Quebec, located in Lanaudière, Cédrière Del Fino has been producing hedge cedars since 1964. More than 40 hectares of black, white and Brandon cedars distributed, planted, pruned and installed both in nurseries, in retailers and individuals.


Goal :

Optimize the weeding process in order to reduce operational costs, dependence on labor and the environmental footprint of the activities.


Solutions SOUGHT

Two types of solutions in demand today

  1. Novel intercropping
  2. Adaptation of row weeder robots to integrate the inter-plants


Great openness of the entrepreneur to other types of solutions :

  • Microwave robot
  • Water pearls
  • Biological film
  • Etc.


Additional context

  • 40 hectares to weed: Significant human and material cost
  • Current technique: Manual weeding (herbicide, anti-germination and weeding)
  • Product cost: to be determined
  • Human time: (5 visits / year) x 1 week x 10 employees


Technical details

The solutions sought should focus more on cedars 2 to 5 years.

  • Spacing: 30 to 40 inches depending on the variety.
  • Height: 2 to 5 feet
  • Row (width): 36 inches / 91 cm
  • Soil type: sandy clay loam.
  • High density: 7,500 to 8,000 plants per hectare



  • Ideally, ready to use
  • Open to experimental solutions from universities or research centers
  • (microwave robot, water beads, biological film, etc.).
